Scansite Case Study # 165

Guidant Corporation
CAD models of human hearts

Problems and Opportunities: Guidant is a world leader in the design and development of cardiovascular medical products.
Models were provided for four different human hearts for which CAD models were needed. A very high level of detail capture was necessary

Downstram Application:
An iges128 (Nurbs) CAD model was required. Initially the CAD models were to be brought into Alias for study and analysis, and subsequently into ProEngineer for mold creation.

Solution:

1.Original Model. This model was scanned with our proprietary system and a high density polygon mesh was created. 2. The polygonized mesh was brought into our CAD system and organized into 2,039 patches in preparation for Nurbs Surfacing.
3. A Nurbs surface (iges128) was generated. The Nurbs surface is "watertight" and all patch boundaries are tangent. 4. The Nurbs surface with patch boundaries shown
5. The Nurbs surface has been interrogated for fidelity with the polygonized mesh and a color map generated. All Nurbs patch areas shown as grey are within .05mm (.002 inches) of the polygonized mesh.
